Product Description
Christian parents are sure of one thing–they must discipline their children. Ask them to define discipline, however, and you will find little agreement. Many parenting experts support a strict, “hands-on” approach–usually in the form of spankings. Other believers think a permissive, “hands-off” is the best way to demonstrate love. Caught between these extremes, well-meaning parents feel torn and even more confused about what the Bible really says on the subject.

Is there a better way to lovingly train and guide our kids? Yes, says author Clay Clarkson, and in Heartfelt Discipline he offers a long-awaited, biblical discipline solution that is caring and effective–one that leaves parents feeling confident and guiltless, not saddened or conflicted.

At last, here is a faith-directed approach to discipline that spares the rod but doesn’t spoil the children. Through biblical advice, answers to commonly asked questions, and positive encouragement, Clay Clarkson presents a new, biblical model of discipline–one that allows parents to embrace a completely new way of thinking about childhood discipline, renew their relationships with their children, and transform the dynamics of their family life.

There's no agenda here, accept Biblical truth. I was thrilled to finally find an author that would take the time to define the words for Biblical child training using the original Greek and Hebrew...how refreshing!! I have read too many interpretations that stretch to make the point the author wants their reader to hear. I have been a mom for over 18 years and I can honestly testify that this "Gentle Art of Training" really works!

Minus chp. 3, it is a great book

This book is divided into 4 Parts, each having 4 chapters. If you are short on time, SKIP Part 1 and go straight to Part 2, beginning with chapter 5. I found Chapter 3 on spanking interesting, but do not agree with all of his conclusions and interpretations. I almost quit reading the book after chapter three, but am glad I stuck with it, because chapters 5 through 16 are great. I also believe this book is meant more for the over 4 ages. If you need a practical book for toddlers and very young pre-schoolers, go for "Growing Kids God's Way" series. Clarkson's advice applies more to an age when you can begin to explain and reason with their mind and heart. A two year old needs his actions addressesed differently. Despite chp 3, I highly recommend the rest of the book. My opinion may not be very scholarly, but here it is for whatever it is worth.

Thankyou

Thankyou Clay Clarkson for a wonderful tool, and for being brave enough to write this beacon of light, in a world with LOTs of books on how to do ....a.b.=c job, and if you don't, well, you just aren't following God type books.
Thankyou for giving parents some guidelines, and for telling them to trust the Lord.
I'm glad this was not a how to book, but a book that opens a great discussion on how things have been, why they may not be right, and that it is ok to trust God and follow the Leading of the Holy Spirit in raising our families. It is ok to be tender, to have talks, to be compassionate... the things Christ taught.... :)
I have met the Clarksons over several years and they have wonderful children, who are from young, to young adult.
This was a great book for us to read, as parents of 7 children from 28 down to 7.
You can never stop learning.

This book gave me back the joy and peace of parenting

I read, A LOT of books, especially about parenting. This book is the best one I have read, and every parent needs to read it. First of all, it is wonderful to read a book that helps you believe in yourself, instead of the author's "method". Secondly, it shows you how to make room for the Holy Spirit to work in your own individual family, it's not a generic method of legalistic rules. Thirdly, it brings up the discussion of interupting scripture, which more people need to do for themself, instead of following church tradition. I was a spanker, (I just thought it was the "Christian" thing to do!) and it was breaking my heart, and my children were becoming distanced from me. Now my heart and home has more peace and joy, thanks to the wisdom from Mr. Clarkson. I am planning on giving this book to everyone I know who has a baby, and am recommending it to everyone.

While Clarkson presents some excellent ideas for parenting, his biblical support is weak, at best. He seems to start with an agenda of wanting not to spank and procedes to interpret the scripture in a way which supports his hypothesis. There is no support for his conclusions, only a starting point for discussion. He may be right in the way he chooses to interpret words but he does not demonstrate that in the book.

What concerns me most is his matter of fact statements regarding the effectiveness of his approach. One would conclude that following his method would absolutely produce the results sought, yet he offers no supporting evidence. I don't know Mr. Clarkson's family but from the information in the book, it appears his children are still at home. Caution would dictate that an author refrain from making seemingly iron-clad promises without evidence. In this case, the first evidence would be in the lives of his adult children.

In the end, he does leave room for spanking, but his attempt to prove it is not supported by scripture is considerably less than exegetically satisfying.
